Character.AI is a chat app for talking with millions of user-made AI characters, from fictional figures to tutors, by text or voice.
Character.AI lets people chat with AI characters created by its community, including fictional figures, historical personalities, companions and practice partners, and build their own by writing a name, greeting and personality. Conversations can be in text or by voice, and Stories offers a branching, choose-your-path format where users pick two or three characters and a genre. The Imagine Gallery turns chats into images, and PipSqueak 2 became the default chat model in April 2026. Users under 18 can no longer have open-ended chats with characters and instead get Stories, videos and Streams, with age checks and Parental Insights for linked parents. The c.ai+ subscription removes ads, adds premium chat styles and raises memory limits.
